Old School Cool Starts With Some Vintage Duds!

Vintage clothing shopping is awesome … and no, you don’t have to be a dirty hipster to enjoy that awesomeness!

I don’t know if you’re aware of this or not, but more and more people are now reduce-reuse-recycling, rather than tossing everything out into the trash (which is ultimately the responsible thing to do). Combine this trend with an every-increasing human population that has limited resources, and you’ll have quite a few more people (note: understatement of the year) worried about what our planet’s future might bring. In response to this crisis, many have changed their wasteful habits by reducing their carbon footprints.

Now on to the good stuff: popular places to buy this “vintage” clothing include charity-driven second hand shops, garage sales, flea markets, and vintage clothing shops (although some of these greedy bastards like to hang onto their crap way too long, which means less savings for you). Then again, some good vintage pieces can also be obtained from older friends and relatives who like to keep their old clothing for long periods of time! The advent of the internet has also been a huge boon to the vintage clothing world (don’t believe me? Check eBay then! You’ll see)!

Also, why not look through that box full of your grandfather’s clothes and marvel at the fashion potential that it exudes (ok, skip the powder blue leisure suits … I meant that old, sweet a@# trench coat of his)? The best part of taking this route: it’s both free and authentic. Ok, now back to the dirty hipsters: some of these clowns wear things that are falsely called vintage, just because their friends are calling it vintage (or that vintage store owner called it vintage, so he could jack up the price) but don’t believe their hype. Vintage is much more than 10-year old shell-top Adidas or overpriced graphic tees, and just because something has a vintage look doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s vintage (read: Hollister and Abercrombie & Fitch). After all, the word “vintage” is thrown around all willy-nilly lately … so stay on your toes!

The best thing about vintage fashion is that if you buy something and keep it long enough, it actually becomes vintage, and if you haven’t let yourself go you might be able to squeeze you fat a@# into some of that stuff you wore back in high school (if not, sell it to some skinny dirty hipsters. What is this, “Pick on a hipster” day? Yes, it is … now go tell them your stuff’s “vintage” so you can pump up the price). Depending on how old you are, it might be considered vintage (if you’re in your late 30’s, yes. If you’re 22, no! Not by a long shot). This is the cheap way to do things … and hey, the Lord knows I’ve been called cheap before … so it really doesn’t hurt my feelings anymore.

Did you know that by wearing vintage clothing, you are actually recycling them? If not … well you are! And on a larger scale than that, you’re also NOT contributing to the wasting of natural resources being used to produce new stuff, you’re NOT contributing to pollution at all, AND you’re saving those items from going into a landfill. Now, if you really saw what is going on in this world, you’d be surprised (and possibly sickened) by the amount of perfectly good clothing being discarded every year by wasteful people who simply want something new to wear (you can thank the fashion industry for this crime against humanity).

My man, part of the fun in buying vintage is the thrill of the chase! It’s true … even if that means having to crawl through a lot of mediocre junk to find something really kick a@# (however, when that time comes … WHOA!!! Watch out, homie … it’s going to be explosive, and well worth the wait. Trust me on this one). The best part of this little shopping adventure is that in the end you will probably never run into another person who owns the same piece as you have just found (feels good to be unique … doesn’t it?).

Hey, vintage is the best deal going! Where else can you find superiorly made, one of a kind, fashionable clothes AND at the same time save money, help the planet, and donate to charity all in one purchase? To me, shopping for old school vintage stuff is like winning a freaking lottery, and if there’s a better way to do all of that stuff, I sure as hell don’t know about it!

Oh yea, I’m sorry hipsters for picking on you … no, I’m not (I was just kidding about being sorry)! You suck … and you’re giving slightly used, old school clothing a bad name! And you’re making them smell like ultra light cigarettes, PBR and whatever else you guys think is cool today, and out of fashion tomorrow (now tell me how un-cool I am, just like you do everything else)!
